TOWNSCAPE &
PUBLIC REALM

Sightline Sketchup.png

Townscape

The Silo stands centrally within the new business and leisure district and will contrast against the new buildings that will be erected. This contrast, along with height restrictions on new buildings to not exceed 7 storey's, will ensure that the heritage of Silo D and Millennium Mills is protected, emphasised and celebrated.

The new shopping boulevard has been located as such to provide a line of sight from Silo D to the Millennium Mills plaza and out to the water which reiterates the site's unique location and heritage. This physical connection will allow easy pedestrian passage between the buidings which should support the ongoing success of the Silo's commercial activities.

A line of sight physically connects the heritage assets on the site and highlights their importace within the townscape.

Public Realm

The park along with the paved spaces outside the Silo contribute greatly to the public realm which is currently very limited in the area. A cafe with waterfront deck, lido, large park, bike lanes and play equipment all come together to attract a wide variety of visitors to stay and enjoy the space.

This will act as one of the centres to the development where open public spaces will accommodate street performances, markets and festivals, just like the cultural hub in Nante, the area will be a hive of activity throughout the year.

The open public space surrounding Silo D will become a place of performance where people are invited to gather, interact and enjoy themselves.

Public Realm Connectivity & Safety

The new public realm will be accessible through a number of paths, cycle ways and parking spaces for those with limited mobility (available within the Tesco car park to the south west).

In response to residents concerns on safety, all pathways are wide, car free and well lit with mixed use buildings providing 'eyes on the street' at all times.

The public realm is built to be inclusive and will be welcoming to all by ensuring that it connects with existing pathways and routes into neighbouring areas. Physical connections will be further strengthened with the park providing a permeable boundary whilst improved pedestrian road crossings will ensure that it is safe for residents living at Royal Wharf to enjoy the open public spaces too.

New, larger and safer crossings across the A1020 will be implemented to connect existing residents to the new park and public realm. These crossings will be colourful to provide interest and highlight the route to the new cultural and creative centre.
