Listed Building

Silo D has been registered as a Grade II Listed building by English Heritage meaning there are restrictions on how the building can be altered. To maintain the character and original appearance of the structure, little change will be made to the exterior.

The main body of the building will painted white with the recognisable 'D' being highlighted in a striking orange colour to re-brand the building as a new cultural venue. The two wings that will be added to either side of the structure's core will be painted blue as a way to differentiate them from the existing structure and maintain the buildings history. Blue has been chosen as it is another bold colour that will paint the building as a cultural landmark, as well as paying reference to the vast blue network that surrounds the site.

The silo structure will keep its original appearance whilst the two extensions will be painted blue to signify that they are newer additions.

Heritage

The new cultural venue will play host to a range of different exhibitions and performances, many of which will be from local artists who will be encouraged to share their experiences and memories of the area throughout the years. Facts, photos and stories from the rich and varied history will also be displayed on a mural in the entrance lobby for visitors to read as they walk through.

The water is an integral part of the heritage of the site and therefore the blue network will be reactivated for all to enjoy. The silo's waterfront cafe along with the adjoining lido and inlets with steps down to the waters edge provide opportunities for all ages to interact with the water, and therefore the site's heritage, once again.

Just as the new museums and venues invite the public to interact with Portsmouth's maritime heritage at Gunwharf Quays, Silo D will provide multiple activities for the public to come and discover and appreciate the maritime heritage offered within Silvertown Quays.

Similar to Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth, Silo D will help to reactivate the waterway and therefore the heritage of Silvertown Quays.
